One of the more famous ones in Alberta is Melanophila acuminata aka The Black Fire Beetle - a jewel beetle (Buprestidae) with infra-red sensors near the leg bases. The Strickland has a write up on it:

http://www.entomology.ualberta.ca/searching_species_details.php?c=8&rnd=00070306&s=3005

Also, the Natural Selections Exhibit at the Royal Alberta Museum has a display on fire and beetles, if you are interested.HomeBugGardenerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11845748276844681280noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3024382604105375596.post-33183188829752987122010-05-25T21:00:27.708-06:002010-05-25T21:00:27.708-06:00Hi Dave,

Thanks for the ID!

The garden is coming-up great now with all the moisture we have had. I am going up to the Opal Natural Area soon to see how the fires have affected it. Hopefully we have had enough rain now to take care of the hot-spots. Are there any bugs that take a particular interest in burnt out areas?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3024382604105375596.post-6763355485327687182010-05-23T20:25:56.078-06:002010-05-23T20:25:56.078-06:00Cool assortment of spiders, and nice photographs b...Cool assortment of spiders, and nice photographs by your wife.
